Before there were flowers and our farm in Agawam, I was growing asparagus in Hadley. This time of year, locals would start stopping by my little roadside stand, asking if it was time yet for the first spears. For many, the arrival of Hadley’s famous asparagus meant spring had truly begun—so tender you could eat it right out of the field.

Our family farm turns five this season, making this spring even more joyful around the farm! Although accustomed to seasonal cycles on the farm, there’s always one surprising morning when the scritch crunch of my muck boots on frosty grass transitions into soft, squishy footfalls on matted grass clumps the texture of pudding.

There’s nothing quite like this time of year—the thrill of sowing thousands of seeds for our curated specialty cut-flower plant collections, knowing that each one holds the promise of a stunning, garden-grown display.

Leading up to Valentine’s, the farm buzzed with a joyful energy as we harvested and arranged armfuls of blooms brimming with care. While it may look like work to others, to us it’s pure delight—each bouquet is a chance to share a little love from our fields to someone’s home.

We planted them in hydroponic crates—an investment we made years ago to reduce waste and long-term costs. These crates, built to last a lifetime, have allowed us to eliminate the use of soil, peat moss, and plastic bag transport.

Amidst the daily hustle, it's all too easy to overlook the significance of International Women's Day, so I'm taking a moment to honor a sliver of the women who have quietly uplifted me with their unwavering support and encouragement but may also inspire you.

I had to take a moment to sit down and reflect on what has been an absolutely magical Valentine's Day here on the farm. Last week holds a special place in my heart as we celebrate not just love, but also growth, resilience, and the power of community.
