Tuber Harvest

Tuber Harvest
We could not be more excited to finally offer up our dahlia tubers! All of the varieties that you will find in the online shop were grown right here on the farm. These are of the same planting stock that we will use ourselves this coming year.

ROOTED FLOWERS MARY IN FIELD
A few years back, a control element in our tuber storage area failed. It was catastrophic to our original tuber stock, eliminating everything we had built up. We have been working hard to rebuild this crop to make the tuber shop possible.

Rooted Flowers dahlia dividing

Each spring we plant one individual tuber. These potato looking fingers grow more within the soil, so that by fall, we can dig them up and divide. One tuber might yield 6 or more new tubers that can then again be planted. This process repeats itself every year.

Dividing dahlia tubers at Rooted Flowers
Nothing about harvesting dahlia tubers is short work. It takes us weeks to get everything out of the ground and prepared for winter storage. Every clump is hand dug with a shovel, rinsed, cured, divided, and finally, put into storage where they receive daily checks.

Our tubers are available for purchase in the Online Shop this Sunday, January 23rd 2022 @ 10 AM EST. Each order will contain planting instructions and ship (U.S. residents only) early April once the risk of cold damage has passed.

I have been admiring your farm thru facebook and your blog. Love your story! All of your flowers and bouquets are beautiful especially the dahlias. I have always loved gardening…something my father taught me as a young child. Now that I am recently retired I have more time to pursue my hobby. Last year I expanded my vegetable garden and redesigned my flower bed. It sure would look spectacular with dahlias! 😏 I love zinnias also, which I grow from seed every year, and they remind me of dahlias. I have a shady nook at the back of my house and this year I would like to try hellebores there for a subtle splash of color. Thank you for this opportunity!

My sister had your dahlias in her wedding bouquet in October and I’d love to surprise her with some home grown Rooted dahlias this year since she doesn’t have a garden of her own yet!

In addition to dahlias, I’d love to eventually grow some peonies, lisianthus and anemones! We are moving to a new home this spring and I can’t wait to FINALLY start a proper garden since we have been renters for the past 6 years!

The Timeless Charm of Pansies
The Timeless Charm of Pansies

When I was in my early teens, I worked for a vegetable farm that sold bedding plants in the spring. Every Sunday, you could find me at the “flea market.” It’s equivalent today’s Facebook marketplace but in an open field with each vendor on their 10’ by 10’ plot. I’d be there with wagons full of flowers and a fanny pack selling plants.
